Poor woman. She is yoked to a delusional alcoholic narcissist - Rip Van Winkle. Because of his negligence her home is in disrepair - an anethma to the Dutch who loved a clean snug home above all and her household is a laughingstock. Her only recourse is to verbalize her grief and shame. And the unhappy woman is excoriated for her misery. I doing a close reading of (I think) "A Red Stamp) for the term paper, and I basically had to sit down with the poem and the OED and look up every word and look for patterns.
