Thank you for your astute insight into the plight of Dame Van Winkle. Poor woman. She is yoked to a delusional alcoholic narcissist - Rip Van Winkle. Because of his negligence her home is in disrepair - an anethma to the Dutch who loved a clean snug home above all and her household is a laughingstock. Her only recourse is to verbalize her grief and shame. And the unhappy woman is excoriated for her misery. That she should be branded a shrew and the husband lionized as a folk hero is misogynistic injustice.

I love _Tender Buttons_, too. (Not so much _The Making of Americans_). It is such a fabulous example of defamiliarizing so that we may see anew...

I had to read Tender Buttons in an undergrad course and had a hell of a time with it. I doing a close reading of (I think) "A Red Stamp) for the term paper, and I basically had to sit down with the poem and the OED and look up every word and look for patterns. What was cool, though, was that one actually emerged by the end.

Hey, I'm curious-- did you say way back when that the exam was the first week of January? Are you just posting back-logged notes, or did I miss something? Just wondering if I missed the chance to wish you good luck.

I'm writing a week from today and just started my review. Revisiting Mr. Winthrop has not yet proved to be much fun.
